SBLU_spazioalbello invites all those interested to take part in the selection for the fourth edition of OGGETTO LIBRO / BOOK OBJECT. This is the only exhibition in the world which looks at the comparison between design books and artist’s books.

Design books are the result of industrial production, made with particular technical solutions whereas artist’s books are one-off pieces or limited editions.

Design books also have to possess unusual or innovative graphics, paper and printing features, original packaging solutions, unusual materials and are in any case designed for industrial production.

While artist’s books share some characteristics with traditional books, such as cover and pages, they also have to have even a minimal impact in terms of narratives – they should express a story that develops through words (even just one) or an image, or obviously both.

The choice of materials for pages and cover, graphic and illustrative techniques are wide open.

Even sculptured books are allowed as long as they tell a story.

The event is planned in two different sites which will take place during the period indicated but with inaugurations on different days for obvious logistical reasons.

The selected works will be on display in those places where they will be most appreciated. In particulary sculptured books will be exhibited in the ADI Design Museum – Compasso d’Oro.

To amplify the visibility of the “Book Object” Biennale, some windows containing a selected artist and design book will be distributed in strategic places in the city, such as the Pinacoteca di Brera, simultaneously with the exhibitions at the Braidense and at the ADI Design Museum – Compasso d’Oro.

The selected works will be destined for the places deemed most suitable for their enhancement.

The purpose of the event is to create a series of conditions in which the design capacity of designers and artists can be compared through the exhibition of books with the intention of interpreting differences and possible relationships between the two different approaches.

The competition is international and open to designers and artists who may present up to three books that are not necessarily new but which meet all the requirements. Books that have already been exhibited in previous editions are not allowed.

Adult students from professional art and design schools can take part in the selection process.

The exhibition in the showcases of National Braidense Library imposes a size limit of cm 20×30 of the closed book, both for artist and design books.

However, larger artifacts or site specific installations can participate in the selection, e-books, digital works to be agreed and managed according to the availability of the places.

Since the catalog will be made in part using augmented reality technology, it is possible to send a video that reproduce the book (in some its pages), or that show the methods that led to the creation of the book itself or even all that is interesting for the purpose of understanding the work.

Each proposed video must be of professional quality and will be evaluated by a commission.

The video must have the following technical characteristics:
– 16: 9 format – 1920 x 1080 pixels – 25 frames per second.
– The total length of the video must be between a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 30 seconds.
– The video must have a neutral background and show at least five maximum of 10 double pages.
– The video can have graphic and text animations as substantial parts of the work, but it must not have opening titles and closing credits.
