Book Object Festival

5ᵗʰ International biennale of book design and artist’s book

5ᵗʰ EDITION

SBLU_spazioalbello invites designers and artists to take part in the selection for the fifth edition of OGGETTO LIBRO / BOOK OBJECT. This is the only exhibition in the world which looks at the comparison between design books and artist’s books.

The artist’s books, limited edition pieces often self-produced, dialogue with designer books, industrial products characterized by particular technical or layout solutions.

The purpose of the event is to stimulate research, promote quality and compare the planning skills of the designer and the creativity of the artist, discovering differences and similarities.

The fifth edition of the biennial will be held in October 2023 at the ADI Design Museum – Piazza Compasso d’Oro 1, Milan. The exhibition will exhibit all the selected books and, as in the previous edition, it will be possible to access contents in Augmented Reality, through the free “Aria The Ar Platform” application.

NOT ONLY AN EXHIBITION, BUT EVEN A COMPETITION!

Not only exhibition and catalog in Augmented Reality, but, for the first time, a competition which will identify the “Best Books” in the sections Artist’s Book, Design Book, Hybrid Book (books with a mix of characteristics of the previous two) plus an award of merit for the “Best Video” in Augmented Reality.

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS

The competition is international and open to designers and artists who may present up to three books that are not necessarily new but which meet all the requirements. To participate in the selection you must be of legal age.

Adult students from professional art and design schools are allowed to participate.

BOOK

Design books must have unusual or innovative graphics, paper and printing features, original packaging solutions, unusual materials and in any case be intended for industrial production.

The artist’s books must be created with skill and competence and reflect the artist’s poetics. Books with different styles capable of arousing emotions are admitted. They can be made with any material and any technique (from traditional chalcography to digital printing). Sculpture books are allowed as long as they respect the maximum dimensions.

The open book must not exceed the maximum size of 30×60 cm.

In any case, larger artefacts or site specific installations, e-books, digital works can participate in the selection to be agreed with the organizer and managed according to the availability of the places.

VIDEO (optional)

For each of the candidate works it is possible to send a short video, which can be viewed in Augmented Reality both in the exhibition and catalogue.

No Augmented Reality skills are required. The organization will make it viewable using this technology.

The theme of the video is free: it can reproduce all or some pages of the book, illustrate the methods that led to its creation or everything that is interesting for understanding the work.

For issues related to the functioning of augmented reality, the video must necessarily be horizontal (if the work is photographed horizontally) and vertical (if the work is reproduced vertically). The video must necessarily have a maximum duration of 1 minute, but a shorter duration is recommended.

The video can have graphic and text animations as substantial parts of the work, but must not have opening credits and end credits.

The video can have audio and musical content. For each of the contents present in the video (video clips, music … etc.) ownership of the copyright is required.

BOOKS / VIDEOS NOT ALLOWED OR EXCLUDED

Books/videos that have already been exhibited in previous editions of Book Object and videos lasting more than one minute are not admitted.

Works with offensive or discriminating contents, works by candidates who have not paid the registration fee within the established deadlines, are not admitted.

COMPETITION

The fifth edition of Object Book will award, for the first time, a “Best Book” award for each of the categories on display.

Artist Book, Design Book, Hybrid Book and Augmented Reality Video + any special mentions at the discretion of the organization.

The prizes will be awarded following the unquestionable judgment of the Jury, which reserves the right not to award any merit prize for one or more categories (if none of the books will meet the award criteria).

The works will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

Concept quality
Language innovation
Creativity and artistic originality
Excellence in manufacturing, manual or printed
Use of materials

The names of the winners will be communicated on the day of the inauguration (October 2023, date to be defined), at the ADI Design Museum.
